Natural Disaster Preparedness: Hurricanes

May 23rd, 2012

Along with other natural disasters and disturbances, hurricanes can cause damage and endanger the lives of those who live in the affected areas. Hurricanes are giant tropical storms that can pack a punch, with wind speeds over 160 mph and dropping 2.4 trillion gallons of rain in a single day. These high winds are very destructive and can produce tornadoes, while the torrential downpours cause additional damage through flooding and landslides that can occur not only on the coast, but miles inland as well. However, 90% of all hurricane deaths result from storm surges.

Now that we know the risks, how does one prepare? The best defense is to have accurate weather forecasts and warnings to give people adequate time to evacuate. However, one may not always have the time to evacuate the area before a hurricane strikes. That is why you need to stock your home with various emergency supplies in case a hurricane or other natural disaster was to strike.
