Have Berkey questions you need answers to? Here is the place to find out all you ever wanted to know about Berkey water filtration systems.
Q: How do I know when it’s time to replace my Berkey water filtration system?
A: We understand that knowing when to replace the filters may be difficult but we have two different ways to help you know when it is time to make a change. Berkey water filters don’t ever stop working so that is not a good way to check the filters. However, your water flow can start slowing down if your elements are not filtering correctly. If you have already cleaned the filters and they are still slow, it is time to replace them.
Q: It there a way to test my Berkey system to see if it’s working correctly?
A: If your water did not taste bad even before using a Berkey you certainly can’t tell if it’s working properly that way. The best way to test is to use the red food coloring test. Simply add a teaspoon of red food coloring for every gallon of water in your upper chamber. Once you pour the water out of the spigot it should be clear. If it is, your system is working correctly.
Q: What do I do if the red color is still in my water?
A: Sometimes the only adjustment that needs to be made is to tighten the wing nuts inside the system. If you still have a problem after that you need to contact Berkey for further instructions.
Q: What do I do if my system is not filtering water after I get it set up?
A: High water tension is what generally causes this problem and it’s easily fixed. Because air is not circulating properly through the system it is important to go over the priming instructions again and possibly prime the system once more.
Q: Will our water softener system work with the Berkey system?
A: It is possible however Berkey does not recommend you do so. When you have a water softener extra salt is deposited in the water to soften it. This will most likely shorten the lifespan of your new Berkey filtration system.
Q: Can we use our Berkey water filter system on our swimming pool water?
A: This will be okay to do for emergency drinking water only. You can filter chlorinated water with the Berkey system but this will wear down the system quickly. Only use this as an option in a state of a true emergency.
